Back to reality
It’s the beginning of the New Year, and we all have to come back to reality and to what life really seems to be about – work. It is hard enough to return to work after Christmas, let alone returning to live and work abroad.
It may feel OK at first, but it somehow stops making sense after a week or so. Struggling to readjust to the routine of everyday life makes living abroad increasingly difficult. Living abroad is difficult on many levels and now - after the Christmas period – it seems to be dragging on forever.
Support is one of the most important things when living abroad. Returning from Christmas holidays spent in our homeland can evoke certain emotions and questions in us which need to be processed and worked on so that we are able to move on and live a happy life abroad.
Sure enough, New Year’s resolutions go out the window by the end of January. Back to the old ways of being, postponing phone calls home. Keeping in touch with our loved ones requires self-discipline. We lose ourselves in the business of everyday life and forget about the support we have back home.
We are the creators of our own reality. Life abroad does not need to be lonely; most of us have families back home. So why not keep in touch with them more often? They miss us just like we miss them.
