Personal Support Network
There is no doubt that we all need the support of others. We all want to be a part of something greater; we all want to “belong”.
When living abroad, it is more difficult to carefully choose who we let into our lives, who we trust and who we rely on. Why? Because there is not enough time to get to know the people we just met. And because managing life abroad alone is harder than it was back at home, we form relationships and friendships faster and with less caution.
Some people are disappointed over and over again, until they learn to rely only on themselves. As much as I agree with the idea of counting on your own judgement, emotions, ideas etc., I believe we need personal support network of people who share the same values as us or who are mature enough not to be judgemental about it, so that we can feel relaxed and safe amongst them.
To surround ourselves with the right people requires a high level of awareness of our own values, needs and wants; otherwise our lives will be full of disappointments and disagreements. It is extremely tiring to walk on eggshells all the time and to manage our lives without the right support, especially when living abroad.
